Grapes of Wrath by mahwish
Society and Nature in John Steinbeck’s “Grapes of Wrath”   • Presented by Mahwish • Presented to Ma’am Saima  Introduction • The dust bowl during the 1930’s was worst man-made ecological disaster in American history. • It swept away the breadbasket of the nation during that time. • “ Men and women huddled in their house and they tied handkerchiefs over their noses when they went out and wore goggles to protect eyes .”    The discrimination between rich and poor • Ma Joad expresses an ironic viewpoint “go to poor people. They are the only ones that ‘ ll help--- the only ones.”. Throughout the novel, the act of kindness by poor people are contrasted to the greed and manners of the rich. Analyze and interpret the situation. What is Steinbeck saying about human nature?  Hunger and Deprivation Materialism and inhumanity • The world presented to us in Steinbeck’s ‘Grapes of Wrath’ has an inexorable quality in which large and invisible forces seen to operate upon vulnerable human beings at every law. • The tractors that level the farms of Oklahoma, the bankers who evict the farmers from the land, the moment of the Joad family across California, the deaths that mark the family journey and the rising flood reveal that individual is helpless in relation to the effects of nature and economy.  Okies • ‘ Okies ’ desperately search for work to the worst unemployment and underemployment. • The representation of strong women keep fragile families together. • Racial epithets are rampant in the world of this novel, and we hear stories about how ancestors of tenant farmers violently stole land from Native Americans. In trying to defend his land from being taken by the landowners, one tenant farmer argues, "Grampa took up the land, and he had to kill the Indians and drive them away“    • Society ran Okies down just as the car ran down the dog.
