AR-100 PROTECTION AGAINSTOVERPRESSURE 1 (a)  All pressure vessels within the scope of thisDivision shall be provided with protection against over-pressure in accordance with this Article. (b)  Heat exchangers and similar vessels shall beprotected against overpressure in case of an internalfailure. (c)  Vessels that are to operate completely filled withliquid shall be equipped with pressure relief devicesdesigned for liquid service unless otherwise protectedagainst overpressure. (d)  The protective devices required in (a) need notbe installed directly on a pressure vessel when thesource of pressure is external to the vessel and is undersuch positive control that the pressure in the vesselcannot exceed the design pressure at the operatingtemperature except as permitted in AR-150. (e)  Vessels connected together by a system of ade-quate piping not containing valves which can isolateany vessel may be considered as one unit in figuringthe required relieving capacity of pressure relievingsafety devices to be furnished. (f)  Pressure relieving devices shall be constructed,located, and installed so that they are readily accessiblefor inspection and repair and so that they cannot bereadily rendered inoperative (see Appendix A), andshould be selected on the basis of their intended service. The use of rupture disk devices may also be advisable when very rapid rates of pressurerise may be encountered. AR-120 PRESSURE RELIEF VALVES 4 (a)  Safety, safety relief, and relief valves shall beof the direct spring loaded type. (b)  Pilot operated pressure relief valves may be used,provided that the pilot is self-actuated and the mainvalve will open automatically at not over the set pressureand will discharge its full rated capacity if some essentialpart of the pilot should fail. (c)  The spring in a safety valve or safety relief valveshall not be set for any pressure more than 5% aboveor below that for which the valve is marked, unlessthe setting is within the spring design range establishedby the valve Manufacturer or is determined to beacceptable to the Manufacturer. The initial adjustmentshall be performed by the Manufacturer, his authorizedrepresentative, or an Assembler, and a valve data tag 3 A  nonreclosing pressure relief device  is a pressure relief devicedesigned to remain open after operation. 4 A  safety valve  is a pressure relief valve actuated by inlet staticpressure and characterized by rapid opening or pop action. A  relief valve  is a pressure relief valve actuated by inlet static pressure whichopens in proportion to the increase in pressure over the openingpressure. A  safety relief valve  is a pressure relief valve characterizedby rapid opening or pop action, or by opening in proportion to theincrease in pressure over the opening pressure, depending on applica-tion. A  pilot operated pressure relief valve  is a pressure relief valvein which the major relieving device is combined with and is controlledby a self-actuated auxiliary pressure relief valve.
